Cubs’ win streak hits five to sit atop South in lock with rival

The Medicine Hat Cubs have put themselves in the hunt for the South division lead.

A pair of wins over the weekend extends the defending HJHL champion’s win streak to five games. It also ties them with the OKotoks Bisons for first in the South division, with the Cubs holding a one-game advantage.

The Cubs won big in their first look at the Rimbey Royals, beating the HJHL’s newest club 9-1 on Saturday. They toppled the Sylvan Lake Wranglers 6-4 on Sunday.

Forward Brennan Finke notched a hat trick Saturday, one of eight Cubs to record a multi-point effort. Nolen Sutherland had a pair of goals, Cole Fisher had a goal and two assists and all three of Josiah Jackson, Colby Gulliver and Kade Dickie had a goal and an assist.

Hudson Corbett made 15 saves in the win.

A four-goal third period and a hat trick from Jackson propelled the Cubs over Sylvan Lake.

Jacob Hazzard had a pair of goals and Finke had a goal and one assist. Kayden Van Ham stopped 19 shots for the win.

The Cubs will battle for the South division lead this weekend, heading to Okotoks on Saturday to face the Bisons before returning to home ice on Sunday. They host the Cochrane Generals for a 3 p.m. contest Sunday, their first home game since Oct. 2.
