Sunday afternoon’s Heritage Junior Hockey League game between the Medicine Hat Dynamic Industrial Cubs and the Airdrie Techmation Thunder at the Kinplex was called and ruled complete during the second period following an injury to Cubs defenceman Brodie Heimbecker.
The game was stopped after a match penalty was issued to Airdrie’s Justin Campbell. Heimbecker was injured after taking a heavy hit, which resulted in a 5-minute major and a game misconduct being assessed to Campbell for interference. The Cubs captain was conscious and responsive as medical personnel attended to him and transported him off the ice on a stretcher.
As a precaution, Heimbecker was taken to hospital in Medicine Hat for further assessment. Cubs medical staff took every measure throughout the process to carefully coordinate his care and prioritize his safety.
UPDATE: Brodie has since been discharged from the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital and is recovering safely at home.
The Medicine Hat Cubs organization is wishing Brodie a full and swift recovery. The team appreciates the concern and support shown by fans, players and members of the hockey community.
